How to Prevent Basement Flooding

SERVPRO® of North Mississauga understands how devastating it can be if you’ve ever had to deal with any type of basement flooding, also how upsetting it can be to have your personal property ruined by water damage. Not only is it a major hassle but it can also be very expensive. While there are some things you just can’t predict, there are quite a few ways you can prevent basement flooding before it even starts. The good news is, it only requires you to be conscious and observant. Keep reading on and we’ll tell you exactly how to prevent basement flooding in 5 easy steps.

Basement flooding can happen at any time but tends to occur in the spring. This is due to the influx of water from snow melting (where applicable) and an increase in rainstorms. If you find your basement flooding during the spring every year, you will definitely benefit from the tips below.

1. Check The Foundation

Check the foundation around the outside of your home for any cracks. Also, look inside the basement on the floor and walls. If you find any small cracks, you can use epoxy to fill them. If the cracks are wide or large, it is recommended you call a professional in. Keep an eye on your foundation and basement walls and floors throughout the year. Repair any problems you find.

2. Keep Your Sewer and Septic Maintained

To prevent basement flooding, it is essential to have your sewers checked and your septic tank cleaned; if you live in one of the older neighbourhoods in Mississauga, and are not hooked up to water and sewer. After the snow has melted and heavier rain starts to set it, clogs in the sewers or overly full septic tanks will become apparent as they overflow or back up and flood your yard and basement.

3. Clear Gutters and Downspouts

Our lovely city of Mississauga is filled with beautiful trees. Please make sure you check your gutters at least once a month and clear any leaves or branches. Also check the downspouts to make sure they are clear and pointing away from the foundation by at least three feet. If necessary, get an extension or trough for the downspout to make sure it’s far enough away from your home.

4. Invest in Window Well Covers

If you have windows in your below-grade basement, it is vital that you have window well covers for them. When you purchase clear acrylic window well covers, you won’t be sacrificing any natural light but you’ll be protecting your basement and home from rain and more.

5. Check Your Sump Pump

If you have a sump pump installed in your basement, it is a good idea to check on it from time to time. Make sure it is working properly and plugged in. Also check its well to make sure it is free of any debris. Sump pump failures are reported to be the most common reason for basement flooding in Toronto and Mississauga. Therefore, it is important you keep it properly maintained.

What to Do if Your Basement Has Already Flooded

If your basement has already flooded the first thing you will need to do is get rid of the water as fast as possible. If it is a couple of inches or less of water, you can likely do this on your own with a sump pump. If you don’t have one or your sump pump caused the flooding in the first place, you can usually rent one from most home improvement stores. If it is more water than that or you don’t have any type of pump, you will need to call in the professionals from SERVPRO® of North Mississauga to help.

Once the water is removed, the area needs to be dried as quickly as it can be. Professionals often use large fans to achieve this but if the damage isn’t too extensive, a few box fans might do the trick. If you have carpet installed, it likely will need to be removed. Anything that is porous and saturated will also need to go. This can include drywall as well.

Instead of suffering the expensive headache, follow the 5 tips above on how to prevent basement flooding. If you follow all of the steps and remain observant, the chances of having your basement flood will decrease significantly.
