Why Does My House Smell Like Sewage?

Toilet Sewage Cleanup Sewage Odour From Toilet In Mississauga

Here at SERVPRO of North Mississauga we understand that the smell of sewage is certainly not a pleasant one for anyone. But if you’re a homeowner, it can smell less like noxious gas and more like money being shelled out for professional repairs. Here are some of the possible reasons your home might be emitting a foul odour and what you can do about it.

The most obvious place to start is the bathroom. But, if you’ve already cleaned and thoroughly examined your toilet and the smell persists, the issue is likely more problematic. You could have a vent pipe that is not working properly, or a broken or loose seal around your toilet. Reseting your toilet with caulk or a new ring would likely fix this problem.

Often odours can come from the shower—either from a build up of biofilm or clogs in a P-trap. Action to take here would include a solid cleaning job of the tub drain and troubleshooting of the P-trap (smells can come from a soggy clog as easily as from a “dry” P-trap). Just like the shower, a bathroom sink can emit a foul smell too.  First check the overflow area for the same accumulation of biofilm. P-traps in your sink could have the same problems as the shower, as well as washing machines—another potential source of sewer smells.

Washing machines can also have clogged pipes and vents which can trap sewer air. Sometimes, the water itself can be the culprit—both bacterial buildups in the tank and even an over accumulation of hydrogen sulphide in your water can create hazardous odours.

If you’ve taken a look at these spots in your home, and cannot locate or troubleshoot the smell source, then it’s most likely time to call us at SERVPRO of North Mississauga. You could need sewage cleanup, have a blockage in your sanitary main, tree root problems, collapsed sewer lines or flooding that’s not apparent to a quick sweep of the yard.  In these cases, the solutions are best left to the professionals.
